Yesterdays Tyranny: The Tragedy of the Toxic Tories.
The Era I Chose to Explored Politics: A Personal Perspective. 5 to 7 min read
In the lead-up to Brexit, three figures stood out as harbingers of hate: the Tory leader, Jeremy Kyle, and Katie Hopkins. I had concerns about Tories cutting services, believing they would further drain our healthcare and blame it on some other reason. Fair enough, it was already weakened by Browns Labour somewhat. In my town, the government closed our huge learning disabilities complex, which is now an abandoned ghost town. Lucy Baldwin hospital is decaying out of sight, and mental health day centres have long disappeared. Blair's Labour made things work in a way that NHS bosses could buy in services, aiming to raise standards through competition, but the Conservatives exacerbated these issues to the breaking point. I wanted to see something done right for once. This blog reflects the social changes and attitudes I experienced as someone diagnosed with a mental health condition.
'Often, when unwell, it was easy to conclude that I was worthless to the country—an eater, parasitic, a subhuman or insufficient provider.'
The Conservative government promoted negative attitudes toward people like me, and it spread. It felt like a supervillain was in power. I was almost conspiratorial, especially after hearing about the secret Eaton group and the alleged pig head incident.
The Bigotry and Discrimination...
In Parliament, topics related to benefits and mental health were met with disdain. Jeremy Kyle, a right-wing talk show host with a sneering manner of accusing his guests, was particularly egregious. He’d berate his unemployed guests who were increasing his viewers and ratings, and call them jobless layabouts! He often ordered people to get back to work. This disdainful ignorance was accepted. He was influencing public opinion and growing a destructive attitude towards unemployment and mental illness. Kyle scalded one guest for not working, blanking his severe anxiety, a condition that can lead to impairing distress or visit to a emergency room! Mental health is precious, fragile. His manner of bigoted cavalier broadcasting seemed to roll back the good work mental health warriors had done to reduce stigma in society. I suspected a right-wing conspiracy was demonising us on regular day time television.
'He often bragged to guests that it was his name in the title, not theirs!'
Kyle’s show ultimately led to tragic outcomes, including the suicide of Stephen Dymond, a guest subjected to a lie detector test. Kyle’s absence during the investigation showed a lack of conviction. His bragging about the show’s title and the infallibility of lie detector tests, which really have a 70-90% accuracy rate, underscore the immoral nature of such political television. The show's cancellation was a victory for liberty.
Moral Broadcasting...
Other right-wing programs formed biased caricatures of the working classes. Shows like 'The Great British Benefits Handout' and' Benefits Street' presented viewers with more political propaganda, cherry picking camera frames, characters, and cliché examples to strengthen negative views of which, they tarred everyone of that social background. Targetted just as they aimed fear against Islam. Professor Marmot’s 2010 report highlighted the need for investment in less privileged areas, but the recommendations were ignored, they did the opposite! They promoted an agenda to bully people into work. The right-wing narrative was unstoppable, extending to their mighty media sources. When social commentators like Katie Hopkins started tarnishing benefits claimants I became less patriotic.
'Class-based discrimination is ever-present and subtle.'
The Labour leader and his followers, initially appearing more humanistic, were later found to exhibit similar toxic behaviours. I saw insults from hard-left internet users, who labelled me as a racist, xenophobe, and fascist merely for scrutinising politics, in order to learn. The rise of antisemitism within the Labour party echoed the issues seen under Tory Tyrany. My own experience on the internet became increasingly toxic, filled with pointless arguments and relentless debates that exacerbated my low mood and stress.
Political Divides
I learnt that the radicals on both sides seemed to engage in a kind of identity politics game. It didn't take long to discover how perceived social standing or political beliefs are in politics. I realised the hard left and far right were always opposites, but they still engaged in their own respective forms of divisive rhetoric. The internet, especially platforms like Facebook and Twitter, became a battleground for these conflicting ideologies.
Mental health, Islamaphobia, Anti-semiticism, and poverty were all political battleground, and the media played a significant role in perpetuating these issues. I found myself increasingly distanced from political circles that seemed ideological.
What I Discovered in the End
Politics was dominated by a toxicity spilling over to social media, where genuine concerns are overshadowed by ideological battles. No one in power addressed real issues, and the left—wing social media indulged in political correctness, virtue signalling and arguing.
